My work explores the human psyche through photographs of imaginatively crafted miniature scenes. Scenes emerge largely pre-formed in my mind and their physical modelling is intuitive and iterative, using a wide variety of modelling materials and incorporating toys and posed figures. The posed figures often stand in as avatars of unconscious longing or of dread.
The creation of scenes often takes weeks or months, although some are almost “found”. Some scenes are bright with sun and space and even wryly funny, but many are dark and even claustrophobic. Each scene encourages viewers to project their own stories and emotions. The interplay of naturalistic light and uncanny scale in my photographs evokes the symbolism and immediacy of dreams. Viewers are drawn into intimate worlds and confronted by enigma and intensity.
The miniature scenes are crafted so that images can be made strictly in camera; they are not digitally manipulated, except for minor touch-ups. My approach is unusual and perhaps unique. Unlike other miniaturists, my miniatures are not works in themselves, but only necessary props to make a photograph; the photograph is the only product. I note the work of David Levinthal and Laurie Simmons, and the famous, 19th century series Diableries, as pioneers in miniature photography.
My photography is done with a monorail view camera and medium format digital back, using an entirely unique lighting system specifically engineered to work at small scale. The images, however, are best displayed as large scale prints. All images are uncropped. Images are black and white or colour, as best suits the subject and composition.
I am based in Toronto, Canada.
